According to the Nevada DMV's site, you're only exempt from smog checks for the first 2 years on a new car purchase. I just paid for my 4th year on the Prius, and so far the renewal notice has always said a smog check was not needed. Perhaps they recognize that my car is NUCLEAR POWERED!

Also, I keep forgetting that in Nevada, while the tags say "May 2005", the renewal is actually due on the renewal date (in my case, May 10), not the end of the month. Damn $29 fine. Without that, this would have been the first year with sub-$200 taxes.

Maybe after I get the tags and the renewal is confirmed, I'll get a vanity plate.
